However, for those seeking something a little different, why not try the Lake District in northern Italy. Lakes Como, Garda and Maggiore are renowned for their exceptional natural beauty and incredible landscapes. There are many historic towns scattered along the shores of lakes. All are characteristics of the region with its ochre houses with closed shutters, cobbled streets and small churches.

The main characteristics of the region are obviously beautiful lakes, especially those of Como, Garda and Maggiore. There are many excursions on each of the lakes that are worth a look, as the cruising steam on Lake Como and visiting the beautiful gardens on the shores of lakes. If you like historic towns and villages, then take the road through the mountains where they are riddled with beautiful small towns.
Lake History
Italian history is vast and strongly linked to the Roman Empire, is the Lake District that remained of the Empire until its collapse. The Italian Renaissance that took place during the 14th and 15th centuries involved the redevelopment of the historic Italian. This was seen in the arts and architecture of the Lake District. The city of Milan has a great influence on the lakes because of its proximity.

There are many small shops that are unique to the region. The weekly open-air markets are very popular and are fun to look through to find bargains such as jewellery, leather and ceramics. There are also some great art galleries to browse. The towns in the Lake District have many dining options to suit all tastes. The most common food establishments are restaurants, especially traditional Italian eateries, however be sure to check the prices on menus before entering to make sure they are within your budget.
